English is an important and useful language to learn because it is an international language. Millions of people from many different countries use English as a means of communicating with each other. English is used as an international language in industry, commerce, science, technology, medicine, aviation, and many other fields. For many years, the study of English in schools and colleges in countries where English is considered a foreign language has consisted mainly of the study of English Literature. The real study of Literature is a highly advanced exercise. It demands a very through knowledge of English. A language is a tool. Once you have learnt how to handle this tool, you can use it for many different purposes -- for your work or business, for the study of other subjects, for international communication, or for the study of Literature, if u want to. But first you must learn how to handle the tool effectively. We all know that best place to learn a language well is in the country or countries where that language is spoken. For example, if you were living in Britain, the USA or Australia, you would hear English and you would have to use English most of the time in the real situations of everyday life. You cannot get this kind of extensive practice in countries like Iran, Pakistan and other countries where English is taught as a foreign language. The easiest way to get more practice is to read English books as much as possible. You must try to use local libraries or some other means. You should also try to listen to English language broadcasts on the radio and, if possible, watch programs on television. Practicing spoken English is always a problem but you should use any opportunity to practice speaking English with relatives, friends or English speaking foreigners in your area.
